Steeped in history
Popoara Ocean Breeze Villas is rich with historical significance. The name Popoara and its location evoke memories of the genesis; the founding and settling of the Cook Islands 28 generations ago.

Legend has it that famous navigator/explorer Ru, his four younger brothers and twenty young maidens left their home of Tubuaki, from afar north east, voyaged south and landed on Aitutaki to settle the islands.

Arriving late, with the longs shadows of nightfall fast approaching, the group click to enlargeentered one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world and unfortunately struck a shallow coral patch where their double hulled canoe got stuck. After several attempts to loose the big sea voyager, Ru sent his men to cut pandanus logs to haul it to safety and their new home, hence the name Popoara. Popo means trunks and Ara is the local name for the umbrella tree. The landing site and passage entry of this historical voyage is right at the beachfront of Popoara Ocean Breeze Villas.
